Shirel Ponnudurai, Master’s Candidate
Major Professor: Dr. Vincenzina Caputo
Area of Specialization: Food and Agricultural Economics
Expected Graduation Date: Spring 2026
I began my master’s degree at Michigan State University in August 2024, after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural and Consumer Economics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. During my undergraduate studies, I gained valuable experience working with crop data and interned at an agricultural consulting firm, where I researched and presented findings on soybean market dynamics.
Throughout my graduate career, I have continued to fine-tune my skills in data collection, data analysis, and research. Currently, I work closely with the dairy industry in Michigan to study consumer preferences and beliefs about dairy products. My main research focus revolves around analysing consumer demand trends, and creating effective marketing tools to promote dairy consumption across the state. In the future, I hope to pursue opportunities related to consumer research and work closely with food manufacturers and farmers.
When I’m not working on research, I love spending my time with my dog, working on some arts and crafts, and training for my first marathon!
